The common name of cremini mushrooms is actually Agaricus bisporus, a mushroom native in North America and Europe. While they are technically a member of the Agaric family, they are actually closely related to cremini mushrooms that belong in the puffball, cap mushroom, and other types of cremini mushrooms that are found in the forest floor.

Agaricus is a mushroom that can grow in many different places including woody or forested areas, on rocks, or on other surfaces that are damp. Agaricus is actually an edible basidomycete that grows on soil that is rich in nutrients. It has a single color, however, which is brownish white, while young cremini mushrooms may have a combination of colors including gray, brown, and orange.

Unlike the majority of cremini mushrooms, Agaricus doesn’t come from spores but rather grows through the roots and shoots of other types of cremini mushrooms. When purchasing mushrooms from a retailer, ask for a bag of the freshest mushrooms available. Do not choose to buy mushrooms that are harvested in a day or two earlier than the store. Harvesting mushrooms early can allow them to dry out a lot faster and result in mushrooms that will not be as fresh as they should be. If you purchase mushrooms that are picked a day or two earlier than you need them, you can also freeze the mushrooms and use them for future cooking.

As you have mushrooms growing in your garden, look around for pests and diseases. It can be very beneficial to treat your garden as early as possible to avoid future problems.
